Chilling of Varnish

Chilling of Varnish

The problem of chilled varnish.

Craftsman Style

¶ Chilling of Varnish. Varnish should be stored and used in a temperature of from 70 to 80 degrees. When the temperature is allowed to drop to low levels some of the gum or driers or oils in the varnish solidify, they drop out of solution. These may or may not be re-dissolved when the varnish is again warmed up by placing the can in a pail of hot water. If the solid portions do not redissolve, little specks will appear on the finished surfaces causing what is called seedy, sandy, specky varnish. Such varnish should be very thoroughly strained after heating and before using.
