Wood Book Covers

A question about finishing wood book covers.

Ayesha asks about finishing books made of wood.

Hello,

I am a student taking an Artist’s Books class, and I am trying to make my first book with wood covers. I am using a beautiful piece of Oak. I’d like to retain it’s natural beauty, but also finish it so as to preserve the book. It was recommended that I use shellac, and I was wondering if it would be possible to get any advice from you about this. Someone else suggested linseed oil, but I think the oil might make it difficult for the wood to adhere to the paper and bookcloth. I am sorry to bother you, but looking at your website and your obvious experience with wood working, I hoped I would be able to get some suggestions for this project.

Thank you,
Sincerely,
Ayesha Vemuri
